St. Croix- On February 11, Michelle Mycah Leonie Smith achieved a winning time of 1:29:52 in the 600-meter race at the Millrose Games in New York, and in so doing, propelled herself to become No. 1 in the world for the under 18 category. As a member of the Virgin Islands Track and Field Team and native Crucian, Michelle Smith has recast the spotlight on our beloved territory, where world-class athletes from multiple sports disciplines are raised and trained. “It cannot be overstated how significant Ms. Smith’s achievement is to become the 9th fastest high school girl in history in the 600M,” Senator Angel L. Bolques, Jr., stated. On behalf of the Office of the Senator-At-Large, I am so proud of her and give thanks to her parents, who also were track stars, and her coaches who have groomed her,” Senator Bolques continued. “Michelle Smith is another shining example in a long legacy of outstanding student-athletes from the Virgin Islands who demonstrate that unprecedented accomplishments are attainable even amidst formidable challenges,” Senator Bolques concluded.
